Born of Fire
In the heart of our studio, the creative journey begins. Two dedicated artisans labor meticulously, shaping high-fire clay with their skilled hands, imbuing each piece with the essence of their craft. The craftsmanship is instantly seen on each and every piece, as the viewer discovers the subtle fingermarks left behind in the clay, a testament to the human touch and individuality that goes into these collections right from the beginning.
Once modeled to perfection, the pieces are carefully dried before being fired for over 20 hours in our in-house kiln. This initial stage, however, is only the beginning of a story of love and craftsmanship that unfolds with each lamp.
After crafting a small batch, typically 10 to 15 pieces, these two artisans traverse local Southern California, gathering a treasure trove of organic materials. Among the flora and the elements of the forests, beaches, and flowing streams, they select the finest organic materials that promise to sway to the dancing flames during their state-of-the-art second firing. Not only are these pieces crafted by hand directly from the earth, they are deeply imbued with the beauty of the natural elements from which they once came.
Returning to the studio, the artisans transform these organic wonders into reactive colorful mixes, which are then uniquely and artfully bestowed onto each lamp. Every piece is subsequently wrapped in seaweed that has been sustainably harvested from the pristine shores of Malibu. This seaweed acts as a catalyst for subsequent reactions when exposed to fire, resulting in the vibrant, organic hues that define our lamps.
After drying, the artisans delicately place each piece into a repurposed 55-gallon metal drum, accompanied by sticks, leaves, and an assortment of locally sourced hardwoods.
This makeshift kiln must then be transformed into a blazing furnace, reaching temperatures surpassing 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. The pieces are left in this fiery crucible for over 24 hours, giving the organic compounds time to orchestrate a beautiful dance in their fiery embrace, slowly etching intricate designs into the pottery. They perform their alchemical dance, earth and fire creating a unique narrative to each individual lamp. A symphony of nature, with each piece taking center stage.
Once the flames die out and nothing but embers remain, the pieces are cooled and removed, then carefully cleaned, finished, and polished. At this stage the artisans step back and admire the stories of each piece, contemplating as well the stories waiting to be told.
From here, each lamp is diligently assembled with the highest quality solid brass parts. Every brass piece has been individually aged to perfection, with each tiny detail exuding character and authenticity.
After assembly and wiring has been completed entirely by hand, every component is then quality-tested over the course of several hours, ensuring the utmost perfection in craftsmanship from the very first minute to the very last.
The result? A piece of art, a statement of commitment to the extraordinary, a celebration of nature’s inspiration and an experienced artisan’s dedication.
